Search resumes today for lost Mount Shasta climber MOUNT SHASTA, Calif. -- Search crews broke late Monday night without finding a hiker who has been missing on the mountain since Saturday. Karl H. Landers, 69, of Orinda, Calif., was one of three men who started climbing Mount Shasta on Friday. He became missing on Saturday morning after climbing ahead of his partners, according to the Siskiyou County sheriff's office. The search was to resume today. The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Department has been using helicopters to ferry search crews to the mountain's higher elevations. Deputies also used volunteers and the Shasta County Jeep Search and Rescue Team. Landers, Milton Gaines and Barry Gilmore, all retirees from Orinda, began climbing the mountain on Friday. The men had spent the night at Camp 50-50 between Horse Camp and Lake Helen on the mountain Friday night. Landers, who attempted unsuccessfully to climb the mountain once before, was not feeling well on Saturday and his partners told him to climb ahead while they broke camp. When Landers left, the two men didn't see what direction he went, but assumed that he was heading toward the lake, according to sheriff's deputies. Gaines and Gilmore followed Landers, but Gilmore soon became ill and headed down the mountain. Gaines continued searching for Landers, but gave up and climbed down to call for help. Landers was just carrying a day pack and had a single bottle of water. Crews have been searching above and below the tree line, and along the Casval Ridge and the Avalanche Gulch route on Mount Shasta.
