Richard Lopaka Metcalfe, 56, of the 100 block of East Pine Street, Central Point, is suspected of hiding inside the restroom until the restaurant on South Ninth Street closed at 11 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, according to an affidavit filed in Jackson County Circuit Court. About two hours later, Metcalfe triggered the building's alarm after he'd eaten some food he found. Central Point police arrested Metcalfe at 1:13 a.m. Nov. 6 after finding him hiding in the restroom, the affidavit said. During questioning, police said, Metcalfe admitted he entered the business with the intent to trespass and take food. Metcalfe reportedly ate hamburger buns, lettuce, soda and ice cream, and he allegedly caused a large spill while attempting to dispense a milkshake from a machine, police said. The value of the stolen food was less than $50, according to police. Metcalfe faces a felony charge of second-degree burglary and misdemeanor charges of third-degree theft and third-degree criminal mischief. Metcalfe, also known as Steven Anthony Garger, has a criminal history that includes trespassing, burglary and theft, according to court records. Metcalfe is scheduled to be arraigned Dec. 15. He was released from jail Nov. 6 on $20,000 bail, with a stipulation barring him from all McDonald's restaurants. Reach reporter Nick Morgan at 541-776-4471 or [email protected].
