Since his defeat, he has apparently decided he need no longer even show up. Breidenthal has continued to attend out-of-town meetings of groups not directly connected to Jackson County, including a Western Interstate Region conference in Wyoming May 24-27. He was elected president of the board of that organization, a subgroup of the National Association of Counties, but cannot retain that position after his term expires next January. Breidenthal's two colleagues on the Jackson County Board of Commissioners, Rick Dyer and Colleen Roberts, on Tuesday moved to end the practice of reimbursing travel expenses in advance, a direct result of Breidenthal's extensive — and expensive — travel since taking office. That is an appropriate, if belated, attempt to make sure a planned trip will benefit the county before paying for it. But Dyer and Roberts shouldn't stop there. Breidenthal will remain a commissioner until the end of his term, but that should require that he actually show up and do the job he was elected to do. That job continues to pay him $99,673 a year, but he has barely been seen in the courthouse since losing the May 17 primary. County Administrator Danny Jordan told Breidenthal during Tuesday's meeting that he has been in the office for "about one hour" since the election. Breidenthal missed work last week for personal reasons he refuses to disclose. He's entitled to take time off, but that absence disrupted a meeting that had already been announced to the public. Dyer and Roberts also are entitled to time off, and if two commissioners are gone at the same time, meetings cannot be held for lack of a quorum. If Breidenthal wants to continue to draw his nearly six-figure salary, he needs to earn it. If isn't willing to do that, the county should stop paying him, or he should resign.
