Mail Tribune 100: Aug. 30, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 30, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Aug. 30, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Aug. 30, 1916 VISITORS' NIGHT SUCCESS WEEKLY BAND CONCERT Tuesday evening's concert given by the Medford band in the city park and designated "Visitors' Night" proved as expected, the biggest success of any of this season's park concerts. Hundreds of music lovers motored in from Grants Pass, Jacksonville, Ashland and other valley points, to hear the superb program rendered by Medford's popular band. Tuesday's program was well up to the standard set during this season's concerts. Particular mention should be made of Gounod's "Faust," selection of "Irish Melodies" and the waltz "Elaine." There were also a number of popular airs that suited the states of many that were present. Bandmaster Rowland is to be complimented for the manner in which the concerts have been conducted this season. One has only to visit the city park on a Tuesday evening to see and hear the results of his four months conscientious labor. Next Tuesday's concert will be "Ashland Night," when a special program is to be given in honor of our neighbor citizens, who are expected to attend by the hundreds. LOCAL AND PERSONAL Owing to the war the price of wheat straw cigarette papers advanced last Monday, in all Medford cigar stores. Now the essential part of the "makin's" costs a dime. Most of the cigarette papers are made in France and that nation now has its hands full making such things as shrapnel and shells to repel a foreign foe. It was only about three weeks ago that owing to the war, the price of white collars was boosted. The annual venison barbecue of the Riddle Gun and Rifle club will be held next Monday. Twenty fat bucks will be served along with other delicacies. Many Medford people will attend the event, which is fast becoming as popular as the Pendleton Roundup. There will be speaking and program of sports. Claire Seeley left Tuesday afternoon for Palo Alto, Cal., where he will enter Stanford University. Claire was one of the best athletes ever developed in the local high school, and his friends predict that he will be one of the stars at Stanford.
