Little bit of Sturgis comes to town photo by Drew Fleming By Chris Bristol It�s not Sturgis, but for one day Medford was as close as it comes around here to Hog heaven. Some 90-odd motorcycles, most of them pure Milwaukee iron, were on display Sunday outside downtown�s Haba�eros Mexican Restaurant as part of the Fourth Annual Harley-Davidson Bike Show and Street Party. From classic panheads and custom-built Pro Streets to retro Road Kings and Ground Pounders, the bikes were the main event as hundreds of people braved seasonably hot weather for a chance to ogle Fat Boys up close and personal. "This was our biggest yet," said show organizer Mark Daley, owner of Thunder Struck Custom Bikes. "We started out four years ago with maybe 40 bikes. Next year we�re hoping for 100 easy." Among those who registered a bike was Doug Johannson, a civil and structural engineer from Medford, who showed off his new Softail Springer. Johannson guessed he has spent $6,000 customizing the Harley, which retailed for $10,000. Johannson bought his first Harley in 1974, an FXE Super Glide he described as a "piece of junk." Since then the venerable company�s fortunes have changed, thanks to new ownership and the dependable Evolution motor. Japanese and German bikes are faster and more reliable, he said, "but they don�t have the mystique of a Harley. Or the sound." Jeff Harsha, a drywaller and friend of Johannson�s, said he came down to visit, check out the bikes and enjoy the live music, provided free by the hard-working Blue Devils band. "These are great bikes," he said. "Every thing here is cool, and it�s all for a good cause." Proceeds from the $10 bike registration fee, along with a raffle and an auction, went to benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Jackson County. Close to $4,000 was raised, Daley estimated.
