Sams Valley man accused of raping teen, assaulting another Derek Stout Tuesday Sep 6, 2016 at 3:35 PM Mark Freeman Mail Tribune @MTwriterFreeman Investigators say they believe a 23-year-old Sams Valley man raped one teen girl and threatened another with a gun while the three were at his house late Saturday and suspect he may have other young victims in the community. Derek Michael Stout faces rape, sex abuse, menacing and other charges stemming from his arrest early Sunday after the two girls fled from Stout's house on the 3900 block of Old Sams Valley Road, according to the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. Stout allegedly befriended the girls at a party two weeks earlier, then kept in touch via social media and invited the girls over to "hang out" and drink alcohol before the alleged attacks occurred, police said today. The nature of the alleged crime has investigators suspecting it has happened before, given the nature of the allegations and knowing that a majority of rapes go unreported, sheriff's Sgt. Eric Fox says. "There's a good chance it's happened before or (was) attempted before," Fox says. Stout was arraigned this afternoon in charges of first- and third-degree rape, second- and third-degree sexual abuse, menacing, fourth-degree assault and two counts of furnishing alcohol to a minor. After spending the past two weeks communicating with the girls through texts and Snapchat, Stout picked up the girls in Medford and took them to his house and gave them alcohol, police said. Stout allegedly raped the 15-year-old victim, who later was able to escape, police said. He then allegedly pointed a semi-automatic handgun at the 16-year-old girl, assaulted her and told her not to tell authorities, police said. A call from inside the residence alerted police and the victim was able to flee to a neighbor's house when she and Stout reportedly heard the sirens of oncoming sheriff's deputies, police said. During today's court hearing, Jackson County Circuit Court Judge David Hoppe set Stout's bail at $1 million and appointed an attorney to defend him.
