"We got a call around 11:50 a.m. of a fire — it came in as an AC fire, actually," said Ashley Lara, a spokeswoman for Jackson County Fire District No. 3. Lara said residents had seen smoke and flames pouring from the unit, prompting the apartment's occupant to evacuate. Engines from Fire District No. 3 and Medford Fire-Rescue responded to the complex, along with Central Point police officers Lara said were there to provide traffic control. Firefighters had the flames under control within 20 minutes "I believe the apartment is still livable," Lara said, adding that it did suffer smoke damage. Lara said that while the fire appeared to originate in the air conditioning unit, fire marshals are still trying to determine the exact cause. "Right now, it's still under investigation," she said. Lara said the lack of injuries can be attributed to the homeowner's use of smoke alarms, which Fire District No. 3 has been installing free of charge for residents within its service district. "He had proper working smoke alarms that allowed him to evacuate," she said.
