Waiting to greet her upon her release were about 20 family members, according to her sister. Wendy Maldonado was sentenced to 10 years in March 2006, convicted of first-degree manslaughter. She walked out of Coffee Creek Correctional Facility in Wilsonville Monday morning a free woman, according to a spokesperson at the facility. "It went well. I was just really excited. She finally gets to be with her children again," said Michelle Roberts of Grants Pass, Maldonado's sister, in a telephone interview. "She's looking forward to settling in and getting quality time with her kids." Roberts said she was not sure when Maldonado, 46, would return to Grants Pass. Roberts said her sister's four sons all live in Grants Pass, including Randy, who was released from prison in 2011. Randy, who was 16 at the time, was convicted of second-degree manslaughter for his role in his father's death. In court, Wendy and Randy Maldonado said they were protecting themselves from ongoing physical and emotional abuse by Aaron Maldonado, who was bludgeoned to death May 1, 2005, as he lay in bed at his home on Elmer Nelson Way near Rogue Community College. Wendy Maldonado was denied clemency twice, once by Gov. Ted Kulongoski in 2009, and by Gov. John Kitzhaber in 2014. In 2007, a documentary about the Maldonado case titled "One Minute to Nine" aired on the cable channel HBO. Then, this past January, People magazine published a four-page spread about Maldonado. It included her statement, "If I hadn't done this, I know we'd all be dead now." The People magazine article included a photo of her taken at Coffee Creek. The story ended with, "Maybe if I could help one or two women like me not have to go through this, then all this was for a reason."
