The Oregon State offensive tackle watches Utes games whenever possible, eager to see former high school teammate Travis Wilson under center. While Utah’s offense may bring him to the TV, though, its defense consistently impresses. Harlow, a sophomore known for his frenetic playing style, appreciates the Utes’ aggressive approach. Their front seven is strong, physical and relentless, he surmises. It also represents perhaps an erratic OSU offense’s most daunting test so far this season. Utah’s defensive line controls the line of scrimmage, dominating one-on-one matchups as it unloads a cavalcade of blitzes. It’s an ideal marriage of scheme and personnel, Beavers offensive coordinator John Garrett said. The Utes lead the nation with 5.6 sacks per game, nearly 1.3 more than No. 2. They took down UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley 10 times their last outing. Utah defensive end Nate Orchard, the FBS leader with 1.7 sacks per game, ignites the barrage. He is coming off a four-sack performance in the Rose Bowl, and he has totaled 34 tackles, two pass breakups, one fumble recovery and one quarterback hurry this season. But the Utes’ pass rush is deceivingly deep. Ten players have notched one or more sacks. A trio — Orchard, defensive end Hunter Dimick and linebacker Jared Norris — has recorded at least four each. “It’s not just one guy,” Garrett said. “We have to be ready for their scheme. We have to get on the right guys, whether it’s run or pass.” Film of Utah’s 30-28 win over UCLA offered a necessary blueprint. While poring over the Utes’ bevy of defensive highlights, Beavers coaches and players repeatedly worked through two key questions. Was it that the Utah defender beat his man? Or was the sack the product of a UCLA assignment error? Many of the problems, they found, rested with the Bruins. UCLA didn’t seem to adjust to the Utes’ pressure. Utah continued to attack the Bruins’ protection, reaping the same game-changing rewards. “When they see a weakness,” Garrett said, “they’re going to exploit it.” In last September’s overtime win at Utah, OSU surrendered just one sack. The Beavers, desperate to keep Sean Mannion upright, had plugged pass-rushing lanes with extra blockers. Such a tactic seems likely tonight. Regardless of how many blockers OSU employs, though, head coach Mike Riley will stress execution. If players follow their assignments and block cleanly, he figures, Mannion should have a chance to make his reads. Much of that responsibility belongs to a makeshift offensive line. Mike Cavananaugh’s crew, though decent in pass protection so far this season, hopes to eradicate the mental lapses that plague performances at times. The Beavers have allowed just 2.4 sacks per game, but Mannion has faced pressure for stretches in nearly every contest. “You’ve got to be on the same page and know when you’ve got help,” Harlow said. “You’ve got to make sure you don’t overstep anything and give them an easy in. It’s just all technique when it comes down it.” Nullifying Utah’s vaunted front seven will require contributions throughout the offense, of course. Steady production from running backs Terron Ward and Storm Woods should keep defenders honest. If young receivers find space quickly, Mannion won’t need gobs of time in the pocket. Still, tonight’s outcome will partly hinge on a basic reality: When staring down an on-rushing lineman, how does OSU’s senior quarterback react? Hundley drew the ire of analysts Oct. 4 for holding the ball too long against the Utes. Utah should provide Mannion yet another opportunity to showcase much-improved footwork. “It came up a lot in the Colorado game and in past games,” Mannion said of dealing with pressure. “So I think to have done that several times this year already, you feel more ready to make those throws.” Before kickoff tonight, Harlow will shoot Wilson a text message. It will likely be filled with friendly banter. If Wilson were the type to divulge secrets, however, Harlow would probably ask for tips. The Utes signal caller understands the trying task before OSU’s front five as well as anyone. During 11-on-11 drills, he’s the one trying to elude Utah’s front seven.
