Robert Bruce Downer, 43, had snatched a beanie hat and a pair of gloves and was on his way out of the store when he was spotted by two shoplifting- prevention employees, Medford police Lt. Tim George said. George said Downer fought off the employees and punched a security guard as he tried to flee the store. During the fracas, Downer's girlfriend, Brandy Suzzanne Stewart, 33, tried to interfere with security's attempts to detain him. "Downer was shoving customers out of the way as he tried to leave the store," George said. One of the people he shoved was the 11-year-old son of an off-duty Jackson County sheriff's deputy. The deputy helped the employees and security guards secure Downer until Medford police arrived, George said. Downer and Stewart were arrested and lodged in the Jackson County jail on charges of third-degree robbery, harassment and disorderly conduct. In addition, Downer was charged with drug possession.
