Free books. The first Central Point Teachers' Community Book giveaway will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in front of the Crater High Performing Arts Center, 699 N. Third St. Readers of all ages — preschoolers through adult — are invited to come pick out a book to read. Newly appointed association president Shannon Smith said she wanted to spearhead a project to encourage reading and give back to the community. Teachers began collecting books, hoping for a few hundred. "Since it was our first year, we had a goal of getting two books from each teacher. We have about 200 teachers, so that felt like a lot of books," Smith said, noting that she stopped counting after reaching the 1,000 mark. "We went so far over our goal. Everyone just really stepped up. Our superintendent helped set up bookmarks. Everyone just really supported our mission of opening the doors of the world through education for our students." Event co-coordinator Celine Buczek said she was excited to unload the mountain of books from her car and Smith's truck. Teachers who organized the event hope to make the giveaway an annual activity. "We were just blown away by the participation. We didn't want to ask teachers for so much more when there's standardized testing and kids trying to pass proficiencies and all the things we have to get kids ready for the end of school year," said Buczek. Smith said the bookmark donated by the district said it all. "Our bookmarks we get to give away with every book is a quote by Margaret Fuller," she said. "'Great readers make great leaders.'"
