Crews worked overnight to secure a grass fire that in a matter of hours expanded to roughly 20 acres and prompted evacuation warnings for dozens of addresses in the Rogue River area. The Fielder Creek fire was first reported as a grass fire at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 900 block of Fielder Creek Road in Rogue River, according to Emergency Communications of Southern Oregon records. Within two hours, the fire fueled by erratic winds grew to a footprint of about 15 acres, according to Oregon Department of Forestry Southwest Oregon District and Jackson County Sheriff’s Office updates, and prompted Level 2 “Be Set” evacuation warnings in the 900 to 1200 blocks of Fielder Creek Road. By 8:45 p.m. the fire was estimated at around 20 acres, and the sheriff’s office expanded the evacuation warning area to more than three dozen addresses between the 100 to 1400 blocks of Fielder Creek Road. ODF deployed multiple aircraft during the initial firefight. Once winds died down Tuesday night, crews worked overnight to secure a perimeter around the fire. The fire’s cause is under investigation, according to ODF. This story will be updated as we learn more.
