(Mail Tribune / Bob Pennell) Gilmour turns back Prewitt By Damian Mann Mail Tribune Dave Gilmour was leading by nearly 9 percentage points late Tuesday night over challenger Craig Prewitt in the Jackson County Commissioner race. "It looks pretty good so far," said Gilmour, a Central Point Democrat. "So far, I'm cautiously optimistic." But with a good chunk of votes left to be counted, Prewitt, a Medford Republican, said he wasn't ready to concede, preferring to wait until Wednesday to see more complete results. Referring to a previous race, he said, "Jack Walker went to bed behind and woke up a winner." However, Gilmour's apparent substantial lead was unexpected for a candidate who ran a vigorous campaign. Advertisement "I'm a little surprised; I thought we would be ahead," said Prewitt. "I thought we did an excellent job of getting our message out there." According to the Jackson County Elections Center at 11:11 p.m. Tuesday, Gilmour led with 29,648 votes, or 54.2 percent, to Prewitt's 25,018 votes, or 45.7 percent. Gilmour said his opponent ran a clean race without resorting to negative campaign ads. He attributed his apparent lead to a large number of supporters, who gave him 300 small donation of $25 to $50. "I'm very humbled by the tremendous number of people who lent their support," Gilmour said. Even Prewitt's condemnations of Gilmour as a part-time commissioner didn't bother Gilmour. "I don't fault him for anything he did," said Gilmour. He said he would stand on his record and leave it up to voters to determine how much he has accomplished with the county. Sizing up the races, Gilmour said he ran a more focused campaign than his opponent. He said he relied heavily on advertising, particularly on TV spots and through mailers in the newspaper. Gilmour said his Web site, which had video interviews with him on his various positions, got 25,000 hits. His record on the board of commissioners for the past four years has also helped gain him recognition with voters, said Gilmour.
