Mail Tribune / Bob Pennell Department’s new look includes fresh paint For Sheriff Mike Winters, the color of his car says it all. Since taking office in January, the sheriff embarked on another campaign to make his department more visible to Jackson County’s residents. Giving the patrol cars a unique look with forest green paint is just one marketing tool, he said. "We want people to know we’re out there," Winters said. Repainting the department’s patrol cars will be an ongoing project over the next several years as the fleet is replaced a few vehicles at a time. The department will replace four cars in October, Winters said. The only vehicles now sporting the new white-on-green logo are the sheriff’s personal patrol car, and a Ford Bronco driven by Capt. C.W. Smith. The updated paint job most likely will cost around $400 a car, Winters said. Previously, the department didn’t pay to tint cars, as the Ford Crown Victorias came painted white, said Sue Luttes, who manages the department’s contracts. Adding the green decals cost around $140 per car, she said. The sheriff’s department leases its patrol cars from the county for $491 per car each month. The cars are rotated out of the patrol fleet every two years. Most accessories, such as radios and light bars, are reused.
