Tornado defense fuels win over KU SOC BOYS BASKETBALL The North Medford boys basketball team once again stepped up its defense to override a struggling offense. Despite shooting just 18 of 57 from the field, the Black Tornado held Klamath Union scoreless over the final 5 minutes of Tuesday's home game en route to a 48-40 Southern Oregon Conference win. The Pelicans made just 1 of 11 from the field in the fourth quarter, allowing North to rally from a 40-33 deficit. The Tornado's Tate Mellbye scored six of his 10 points in the final stanza and also contributed 11 rebounds. Travis Poulton, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, came off the bench to provide a spark in the third period for North, which outrebounded Klamath Union 28-16 in the second half. "He (Poulton) played excellent defense for us and helped us battle on the boards," said North Medford coach Gene Quilhaugh. "This was his first major varsity experience, and he really stepped up big. We needed an energy pill and he provided it for us." Charlie Jensen led the Black Tornado defensive charge with four steals, three coming in the final period, while Kevin Foreman pulled down nine boards. "This was a big league win for us tonight," said Quilhaugh after the Tornado improved to 3-3 in the SOC. "I was really pleased with the way we played." Mike Olson led North Medford with 15 points.
