East Medford park slated for upgrade Comment By Damian Mann Mail Tribune Follow @@reporterdm MailTribune.com By Damian Mann Mail Tribune Follow @@reporterdm Posted Aug. 12, 2016 at 3:02 PM By Damian Mann Mail Tribune Follow @@reporterdm Posted Aug. 12, 2016 at 3:02 PM » Social News Oregon Hills Park off East McAndrews Road opened in 2013, and Medford Parks and Recreation is already seeking bids on the second phase of the project, which will add a basketball court, picnic shelter and other features. The addition, which should be completed by June 2017, will be built just to the west of the parking lot and will have walkways and lighting. The bids will be reviewed by Medford City Council in September. Brian Sjothun, Medford Parks and Recreation director, said the current budget has $615,000 set aside for the park. About $300,000 will be needed for this portion of the second phase. The remaining funds will be used for a storm-water retention area that will bisect the park. The park's current features include interpretive trails along wheelchair-friendly paths, a handicapped-accessible treehouse, as well as zones for water play, digging in sand and exploring Lazy Creek — which crosses the nearly 15-acre property. Restrooms with solar panels on the roof are also provided. Young children will have a "climbing bear" feature, while older children and adults can climb over a massive 10-foot-tall-by-8-foot-wide boulder that will be hoisted into place. It also will include a water feature that will make it easier for children to build sand castles in a play area. Most of the trees and vegetation along Lazy Creek are native plants. Other trees have been planted in the meadow areas. Oregon Hills Park is Medford's 12th neighborhood park and one of six parks opened since 2005.
