He was surrounded by his wife, Aileen and children. His grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren were all able to see him and say goodbye before his passing. Many friends and church family visited him at his home just days before. Guenther, better known as Ed, Obendrauf was born in Breslau, Germany to Edmund and Bertha Obendrauf. He came to the U.S. on a boat with his mother, when he was only five years old. The only son of immigrant parents, his father had arrived a year earlier to work and provide a way to send for his family. They lived in Los Angeles, Calif. His parents were very pro-active about becoming American citizens and quickly settled into life in America, working hard and setting an example for their son. Ed was very outgoing from a young age. He met his future wife, Aileen Hamilton, at Fremont High School, dating off and on until he went into the U.S. Navy. They married on his first leave in San Diego, Calif. August 15, 1943. He and Aileen later settled in Manhattan Beach, Calif. where they lived for almost 30 years. Their first child was born in 1945, a son, Edmund Bruce and two years later a daughter, Cassandra Lee. He went to work as an insurance salesman but soon after was accepted into the Los Angeles Police Academy in 1948. Soon after he was in the police department, he became a motorcycle officer. Ed was a hard-working man often holding down two jobs. He loved sailing and some of his family's best memories were those centered on the ocean and beach. Ed loved motorcycles and could be seen riding around town visiting friends and continued to ride into his 80s. The friendships Ed and Aileen forged were long-standing throughout their marriage and were considered very dear to them. When Ed retired, they decided to move to Medford, Ore. to be close to their daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren. Soon after their move, they started attending Medford Neighborhood Church which was around the corner from their residence. Ed and Aileen were very active in the church and Ed later became an elder until his death. He was very loved and respected by the men of the church especially his "Saturday morning donut troupe and Bible study group. He commonly had his camera with him, ready to take a picture at any given moment. He loved taking pictures of people and was always enamored by the unusual sights he could capture. If he didn't like a picture well enough, there was always a way to tweak it!! Ed and Aileen would have been married 71 years had he lived until Friday - August 15th. Ed is survived by his wife, Aileen; son, Edmund Bruce Obendrauf; daughter, Cassandra Josalle; five grandchildren, Eric, Brad, Jason, Nathan, and Amanda; five great-grandchildren, LaChelle, Cameron, Erica, Jonathan, and Olivia; and one great-great grandson, Bailey.
