KLAMATH COUNTY Lava Beds participates in annual bird count Comment By Lee Juillerat Klamath Falls Herald and News MailTribune.com By Lee Juillerat Klamath Falls Herald and News Posted Jan. 2, 2015 at 12:01 AM By Lee Juillerat Klamath Falls Herald and News Posted Jan. 2, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Lava Beds National Monument will host the Tulelake Christmas Bird Count Sunday, Jan. 4, as part of the National Audubon Society’s annual Christmas Bird Count. Since 1900 during the holiday season, citizen scientists throughout America have counted birds. The annual Christmas Bird Count provides reliable data that helps demonstrate the importance of national parks to birds. Ashland is conducting its annual bird count Saturday, Jan. 3. Medford conducted its count on Dec. 20. Volunteers looking to participate in the Jan. 3 Christmas Bird Count in Ashland can email John Bullock at [email protected] or Harry Fuller at [email protected] . More information can be found at www.roguevalleyaudubon.org. In Klamath County, wintry weather won't stop the count, said Nancy Nordensten, Lava Beds chief of resources. “This chilly, but fun, adventure in wildlife watching is open to all, for all or part of the day, with a potluck held afterward,” she said. Nordensten said national parks in almost every state are hosting bird counts again this year. More than 40 national parks are listed by Audubon as “Important Bird Areas” because they provide essential habitat for one or more species of breeding, wintering and/or migrating birds. Christmas Bird Counts also help inform the national “State of the Birds Report,” which can be found at stateofthebirds.org. “Because the ‘State of the Birds’ mirrors the state of their habitats, our national parks and seashores, and other public lands are critical safe havens for many species — especially in the face of climate change — one of the biggest challenges to habitat conservation for all species in the 21st century,” Jonathan Jarvis, National Park Service director, said in a news release. “The citizen science Christmas Bird Count is one of the ways we stay informed and involved with important partners like Audubon.” Glenn Plumb, the park service’s chief wildlife biologist, said the NPS makes a meaningful difference — and not just for birds. While the primary point of the bird count is to gather data about trends and the general health of bird population, which informs management decisions and scientific studies, another benefit of this enormous citizen science program is the important way it gains advocates and new enthusiasts for birds. “The National Park Service provides quality opportunities for people of all ages and skill levels to engage in this activity with a meaningful outcome,” Plumb said. Each year, the CBC mobilizes more than 70,000 volunteers in more than 2,400 locations. The 2014-15 count dates began Dec. 14 and run through Jan. 5. When compiled, results will be posted at http://birds.audubon.org/christmas-bird-count.
