SOU volleyball one win from national tournament HELENA, Mont. - Southern Oregon University won twice in the NAIA Region I Volleyball Championship Friday and is within one win of making the national tournament for the first time. Fourth-seeded SOU must beat 16th-ranked Lewis-Clark State in the semifinals today to advance. The Raiders (19-8) defeated Albertson 34-32, 30-22 and 30-24 in their opening match, then topped 13th-ranked Carroll, 30-27, 30-22 and 30-26. In the other semifinal today, No. 8-ranked Concordia faces Carroll. SOU's Kristina Matchett had 26 kills and 28 digs in the matches. Sabrina Garboden had 71 assists. Men's Basketball SOUTHERN OREGON 77, ROCKY MOUNTAIN 74 - At Caldwell, Idaho, reserve guard Hamilton Barnes hit back-to-back 3-pointers to erase a 73-69 Rocky Mountain lead with 12 seconds left to boost Southern Oregon at the Albertson Fall Classic in its season-opener. After Barnes' first 3, Marshaun Jourdan split a pair of free throws, and Barnes came down and buried another trey. Jourdan tried to tie the score on the ensuing possession, but Barnes stripped the ball, clinching the victory. Martin DeGroot led the Raiders with 21 points and seven rebounds. Women's Basketball CHICO STATE 94, SOUTHERN OREGON 72 - At Chico, Calif., the NCAA Division II host had its way with SOU, which opened the Kevin Wilson coaching era in the Tri Counties Bank Coslet Classic. The Raiders fell behind 46-27 in the first half but played Chico State nearly evenly in the second half. Kelley Dexter and Sara Marks each scored 14 points for SOU, and Jaime Stanford and Amy Tangedahl had 10 boards each.
