Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend July 26, 2005 Turnout at fair rises 9 percent By PARIS ACHEN Mail Tribune Turnout at the Jackson County Fair rose by about 9 percent from last year, county officials reported Monday. About 151,200 people attended the fair between July 19 and Sunday. "It’s a big jump," said Chris Borovansky, fair director. "We think it came from good weather, good entertainment, the new amphitheater and high gas prices. "When gas prices are high, people tend to stay closer to home." There was a strong Hispanic showing, thanks in part to Spanish-language publicity and two days of Hispanic events, including music, dance and food demonstrations, Borovansky said. Advertisement "Certainly, we can’t quantify the number of Hispanics, but it appeared there were more Latin faces," he said. Fair officials said they plan to offer similar events next year. The Hispanic events are "not only good for the community, but they’re a money-maker for the fair," said Jennifer Johnson, member of the Latino Network at the Chamber of Medford/Jackson County. "Hispanics have $60 million in buying power in the Rogue Valley." Total revenues from the fair have not yet been determined. "Our spending was up, but we won’t have final revenues for at least another week," Borovansky said. The new 5,900-seat Lithia Motors Amphitheater attracted about 24,000 audience members, he said. Headliners Sugar Ray, Clay Walker, Raven Symone and Diana DeGarmo drew nearly sold-out crowds. Cheap Trick and Tracy Lawrence had more modest turnouts when temperatures peaked at more than 100 degrees. "Weather helps turnout," Borovansky said.
