Phoenix pitcher Tiffany Ross bruised a rib in practice earlier this week, but struck out seven and drove in a run during the Pirates’ 3-2 victory in the first game. The Pirates won the second game, 6-0. "Tiffany was having trouble breathing, but she’s a tough kid and wanted the ball," said Phoenix coach Bill Shearin, whose team beat Rogue River in the final game of the season to win the 2002 Skyline title. "Winning in Rogue River is big, so to win two in their yard is important in achieving the goals we’ve set for the season." In Game 1, the two teams were tied 1-1 entering the seventh inning, when Phoenix took control with two runs. Shannon Reed led off with a single, then stole second. Jennifer Dunlap drove in Reed with a single, then stole second. Ross stroked an RBI single to score Dunlap. "We were nervous, and Rogue River put up the battle we expected," Shearin said. "We’ve been working on producing from anywhere in our lineup. "Shannon Reed had base hits in both games hitting out of our No. 9 slot, and Shonda George doubled to drive in a run in the second out of our No. 8 slot." Rogue River (0-2 Skyline) didn’t go quietly. Trailing 3-1, Lacey Scroggins singled to start the inning, then Laura Jones walked. Scroggins moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a fielder’s choice when Kristi Frederick hit a sharp grounder to the shortstop. Phoenix got the final out of the game on a ground ball to the Ross with the tying run at first base. Ross drove in two runs and left fielder Amanda Todd added an RBI for the Pirates (3-2, 2-0 Skyline). In the second game, Phoenix took a 2-0 lead into the top of the fourth when the Pirates scored three runs to blow the game open. George had three hits and Kelsey Russell went 2-for-3 for Phoenix. Reed, Dunlap and Ross, who had a triple, had an RBI apiece. L — Winfrey. 2B — P: George. 3B — P: Ross. ILLINOIS VALLEY 2-10, MAZAMA 0-1 — At Cave Junction, junior pitcher Kim Hamilton dominated Mazama in both ends of the Skyline Conference doubleheader. Hamilton tossed a two-hit shutout in the opener, then came back with another two-hitter in the nightcap. Hamilton combined for 19 strikeouts, didn’t walk a batter and Mazama’s only score was unearned. In Game 1, the Cougars (4-1, 2-0 Skyline) scored both runs in the first inning. Megan Jackson got the rally started with a one-out single, and Tiphany Pope followed with a single. After Hamilton reached on a fielder’s choice, Ashley D’Arpino delivered a two-run single. Jackson had two hits for IV in the opener. The Cougars jumped on Mazama for four runs in the first inning of the second game. IV had four players — Pope, Hamilton, D’Arpino and Erica Riley — with two hits each in the nightcap. Skyline Baseball HIDDEN VALLEY 7-16, LAKEVIEW 1-6 — At Grants Pass, senior Tyler Mason pitched a two-hit complete game with 15 strikeouts in the opener and Hidden Valley rallied from a five-run deficit in the second game to complete the sweep at the All Sports Park. The Mustangs (4-0, 2-0 Skyline) collected 25 hits in the twinbill. Sophomore Chandler Seyboldt had a 6-for-6, five RBI performance on the day. Skyler Ogden and Rob Tessen each had two hits for Hidden Valley in the opener. In Game 2, Seyboldt smacked a pair of two-run doubles, including one during the Mustangs’ eight-run sixth inning to end the game on the 10-run mercy rule. Hidden Valley’s Trevor Schmidt went 4-for-5 with three runs and one RBI in the nightcap. Mazama (2-0 Skyline) backed Starley’s strong pitching effort by scoring runs in every inning in the opener. In the second game, Armon Chaghapzbanian hit a home run and Jeremy Dugas drove in a run for the Cougars (0-5, 0-2 Skyline). Alton Steinhoff had a double.
