Can one register that soon before a mail-in election? Don't the ballots go out in just a few weeks? ­-- Kate N., Medford According to our calculations, Kate, the young lady in question can indeed squeak in as a registered voter as long as she hightails it to the Jackson County Elections Office shortly after her birthday. The Secretary of State's Elections Division Web site says the voter registration deadline is 21 days before Election Day, which this year would put the cutoff on Oct. 17. The Jackson County Elections Office will start mailing the ballots Oct. 20. Those who'd like a sneak preview can log on to www.jacksoncounty.org and click on the "Election Information" button on the right. Both a sample ballot and the Jackson County Voters' Pamphlet can be read online. Ballots must arrive at the Elections Office by 8 p.m. Nov. 7 to be valid.
