The Jackson County District Attorney's Office has charged Shad Dunbar, 34, of the 300 block of Seventh Street with the attempted murder counts, being a felon in possession of a firearm and recklessly endangering another person. He was arraigned on the charges Wednesday. Dunbar is being held in the Jackson County Jail on $1 million bail after allegedly firing at two newspaper carriers on Sept. 5, initially as they drove past his residence and then again while chasing them in a car. In all, police said, he fired at them five times. He is charged with attempting to murder the carriers, Lawrence Price and Linda Parker, and for recklessly endangering a third person, Luis Brito, whose home was struck by a bullet. Bullets struck the newspaper carriers' car and two homes in the area, police said. Dunbar told police he was high on methamphetamine and doesn't remember the incident, according to an affidavit. Police said Dunbar had no connection with the newspaper carriers but started chasing them with his car and firing at their vehicle. The carriers had been delivering newspapers at about 5:30 a.m. and were forced to flee at high speeds through town to escape the attack. Dunbar was tracked to a Medford home, where he was allegedly hiding in the attic and refusing to surrender. A police dog was sent in and bit Dunbar several times before he was captured, police said. Police said Dunbar is a felon from California. Staff reporter Vickie Aldous can be reached at 541-776-4486 or [email protected] . Follow her on Twitter at www.twitter.com/VickieAldous .
