Darris, a 2007 graduate of Crater High School and an aviation electrician’s mate 2nd class for the U.S. Navy, was named Sailor of the Year for Strike Fighter Squadron 211, based out of Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach, Va. She was awarded a flight in one of the world's most advanced fighter jets, the Boeing F/A-18F Super Hornet. Lt. Cmdr. Mark Berwanger, a 1999 graduate of North Medford High School, was chosen as her pilot. Darris, the daughter of Mark and Connie Darris, went through boot camp in November 2012 and completed “A” school, Initial and Career school for the F/A-18 E/F before being assigned to VFA-211 in 2013. During her time in VFA-211, she has earned her Plane Captain qualification, her Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist pin, Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist pin and Enlisted Information Dominance Warfare Specialist pin. Darris and the rest of her shipmates returned home last November from an eight-and-a-half-month deployment aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt. During the deployment she helped maintain and prepare 11 F/A-18F Super Hornets for combat in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.
