The book features chapters on Lava Beds geology, early inhabitants, the Modoc War and its aftermath, cave discoverers, impacts on park development by the Civilian Conservation Corps, its designation as a national monument and the park's ongoing research. More than 200 historic photos help put the various events in context. Juillerat, who for many years was the regional editor for the Klamath Falls Herald and News and is now a correspondent and freelance writer-photographer whose work has appeared in the Mail Tribune, said he was urged to do the book by former Lava Beds Superintendent Mike Reynolds. Juillerat worked with Jessica Middleton, the park's chief of natural resources to collect the photographs. "It's a book that helps to explain the fascinating, often overlooked history of the Lava Beds and its neighboring region," Juillerat said. "It's my hope it will encourage readers to look deeper into the park's unique natural and human history. It's a fascinating place, both above and below ground." A frequent park visitor for more than 40 years, Juillerat has explored many of its 700-plus lava tube caves along with the park's trails and backcountry. He also claims an unusual connection to Lava Beds. As he explains in the book's introduction, years ago while helping as a volunteer to write the visitor's guide for Captain Jack's Stronghold, he was surprised to learn that he lives in the home of Judson "JD" Howard, an early Lava Beds explorer-spelunker who is credited as being the person most responsible for Lava Beds being designated as a national monument. "It just seemed a perfect fit for me," Juillerat said.
