The America I know is not a racist, bigoted, sexist, hate-filled nation blaming immigrants for everything wrong. We are all, even indigenous peoples, immigrants or descendants of immigrants. This is not a nation that builds walls and fences and divides itself into small self-righteous tribes. The America I chose is committed to equal opportunity regardless of race, color, creed or sexual orientation. The America I cherish prefers understanding over hate, prefers cooperation over competition, and prefers working together to improve the lives of everybody. It is very clear that Donald Trump, Mike Pence and the entire GOP campaign from top to toe is committed to everything about America that is destructive. Anyone who thinks that Donald Trump and the GOP care about middle-class and working Americans is being suckered. Don’t be fooled! They wouldn’t give a rat’s a-- for you. Alan Journet Jacksonville GOP blocks Zika funds As we face a looming public health crisis from the Zika virus here in Oregon and across the country, Congressman Greg Walden is pushing policies that would do more harm than good — restricting access to family planning providers who can offer much-needed services like health education, birth control and STD testing. When confronting a virus that is transmitted by mosquitoes or by sex and that can have devastating effects on a woman's pregnancy, common sense and medical science would indicate that reproductive health care should be central to our response. That's the primary strategy recommended by the CDC, the World Health Organization and many other public health experts. Instead, congressional Republicans want to cut off reproductive health care providers from receiving Zika emergency funds. They also want to go even further — eliminating all funding for Title X in a key funding bill. Title X provides birth control, health education, cancer screenings, STD tests and other essential services to 4.1 million people every year. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley stand ready to work with Republicans to fund solutions that women and families are counting on them to address and prevent this public health crisis before it is too late. Susan Haines Trail Check facts I certainly hope that Chuck Weller (July 30) was being facetious about Mitch McConnell being the one to make the horrendous statement "What difference does it make" when referring to the Benghazi slaughter of Americans. If not, he had better go back and check his facts. It was the idol of the Dems that made that statement to the congressional committee when she (HRC) wondered why it mattered anymore as they were dead and the incident was over as far as she was concerned. That’s the type of American they are trying to elect. One who doesn’t care about American lives fighting where they are sent. That they die due to the phony excuse she made up and told the world, that it was a video. P.
