Pronounced dead at the scene of the accident was Paul S. Elling, who was a passenger in the car that had plunged down a steep ravine in rugged terrain about six miles from Selma, according to the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office. The other four Grants Pass teenagers in the crash, which occurred shortly before 8 p.m., all suffered minor injuries, sheriff’s deputies said. The accident occurred when Grants Pass resident Troy Walker, 17, driving a 1994 four-door Chevrolet Caprice, failed to negotiate a set of curves, deputies said. The sedan left the roadway, rolling down a steep embankment, deputies said. The area where the accident occurred is in the vicinity of a popular Illinois River swimming hole, deputies said. Sheriff’s deputies and medical crews arrived at the scene and pronounced Elling, of the 2400 block of Dyer Road, dead, deputies said. Advertisement Walker and the other three teens were taken to Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass, where they were all treated for minor injuries and released Monday, a hospital spokeswoman said. Sheriff’s deputies identified the other passengers as: Daniel Messer, 17, of the 1200 block of Merlin Road; Jesse M. Anders, 16, of the 100 block of Rosewood Drive; and Elizabeth A. Parish, 16, of the 8400 block of Monument Drive. The Sheriff’s Major Crime Unit is investigating the crash, and deputies Monday did not say whether seat belts were used or where Elling and the other passengers were sitting. Also, investigators said they plan to conduct an autopsy on Elling some time this week. The case remains under investigation. Detectives urge anyone with information about the case or who may have seen the vehicle to call 541-474-5153 or a confidential tip line at 541-474-5160.
