GIRLS SOCCER ROUNDUP Sheldon trips up Panthers Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Oct. 10, 2015 at 6:37 PM Updated Oct 10, 2015 at 8:39 PM Posted Oct. 10, 2015 at 6:37 PM Updated Oct 10, 2015 at 8:39 PM » Social News South Medford was within striking distance of taking down visiting Sheldon in a battle of Southwest Conference girls soccer powers Saturday, but the Irish held on for a 3-1 triumph and remained unbeaten in league. Sheldon built a 2-0 lead before the Panthers scored prior to halftime. “We started the second half with a lot of momentum,” said coach Chris Hollewijn of South (7-3-1, 4-2-1 SWC). “We put a lot of pressure on them in goal with very good chances, but we didn’t put them away.” Sheldon (9-2, 7-0) made the comeback all the more difficult with an insurance goal by Taylor Carman late in the contest. “I truly felt unlucky to not only have a better score line, but to not walk away with a win,” said Hollewijn. “That’s not to take anything away from Sheldon. They’re a good team and dangerous for us.” Emma Eddy scored twice for Sheldon in the first half before the Panthers got on the board in the 27th minute. South’s Whitney Winans backed down a defender, then dumped the ball back to Liz Beattie, who fired successfully from right of the 18 box. “Overall, I was really happy with our team,” said Hollewijn. “We were competing, it was a really good fight by us. We all looked at it afterwards and there was a ton of positives with what we saw today.” NORTH MEDFORD 4, WILLAMETTE 0 : Savannah Bumgardner scored twice and North Medford’s defense took care of the rest in the Southwest Conference game at U.S. Cellular. Bumgardner scored on a couple of similar plays, taking the ball in the middle, working toward the goal and beating the keeper one-on-one, first in the seventh minute, then in the 42nd. Haylie Durant and Haley Janky also scored for the Black Tornado (8-2-1, 6-1 SWC). Brinley O’Neill and Melissa Tonkin shared keeper duties against Willamette (6-5, 3-4). GRANTS PASS 4, SOUTH EUGENE 0 : At Grants Pass, Kylee Dillon and Makayla Hatt each scored in the first half for Grants Pass while Sami Galli and Amanda Solar registered in the second half of the SWC contest. The Cavers (5-5-1, 4-3 SWC) built a 4-0 lead by the 45-minute mark. ASHLAND 3, CHURCHILL 1 : At Ashland, Mya Elder-Hammond scored on penalty kicks early in each half and Calysta Susu-Mago added an insurance goal in the 60th minute of the Midwestern League contest. The Grizzlies (7-0-4, 2-0-1 MWL) led 3-0 before Churchill finally broke through with two minutes to play. MARIST 2, EAGLE POINT 0 : At Eagle Point, Abbie Anderson and Selene Konyn each scored for Marist (6-2-2, 2-0 MWL) at Eagle Stadium. Eagle Point goalkeeper Audrey Jordan did well to turn away a host of scoring opportunities, with defender Krystal Van Dyke also stepping up to boost the Eagles (2-4-4, 0-1-1). ST. MARY’S 7, ROGUE RIVER 0 : St. Mary’s spread the scoring around in the District 5 victory at U.S. Cellular. Seniors Emily Elmore, MaryBeth Barnum, Allie Buccino, Ellie Hough and Emily Riehlman each scored a goal for the Crusaders (9-2-1, 5-0 Dist. 5). Other scores were by sophomore Sara Klott and freshman Meghan Michels. Freshman Maddie Wheelock and sophomore Adrien Birmingham, who shared the shutout in goal with Riehlman, each notched two assists. Rogue River is 4-5 and 2-3.
