FISHING REPORT Fishing Report: Friday, March 13 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Mar. 13, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Mar. 13, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News OCEAN OUTLOOK COASTWIDE: Morning fishing conditions should be good today and Saturday before 20-knot winds and 11-foot seas take over Sunday. Lingcod fishing has been outstanding this week off Southern Oregon ports, with red, black or white jigs all working well. Rockfish catches also have been very good. The ocean crabbing season is open, and Dungeness catches should remain good in coastal estuaries. Anglers can venture past the 30-fathom line for bottomfishing for a few more weeks, but few will bother because near-shore fishing will be good for black rockfish and lingcod. A new marine aggregate limit in Oregon is in effect. It remains seven rockfish a day, but only three can be blue rockfish, and all china, quillback and copper rockfish must be released. If you don't know the difference, get a guide book or don't keep anything other than black or blue rockfish. The lingcod limit is two a day with a 22-inch minimum, and that is separate from the marine aggregate. Razor clamming is closed from the California border to Heceta Head near Florence because of elevated bacteria levels. Call the state shellfish hotline at 1-800-448-2474 for updates before digging. COOS BAY:  Black rockfish catches are very good between the jetties, and pile perch are getting caught under the McCullough Bridge. Fishing is best around slack tides. Lingcod fishing outside of Charleston is very good. Crabbing is best near the jetties. Many red rock crabs in the Charleston area have been tagged as part of a study. Anyone who catches one is urged to call state fish biologists at 541-888-5515. BROOKINGS: Offshore fishing has been excellent this week with lots of good lingcod and black rockfish catches, especially in the morning before the winds kick up. Fishing should hold up in the mornings through Saturday, with Sunday looking a bit iffy thanks to 20-knot winds. GOLD BEACH: Surfperch fishing is very good off most open beaches. Use Berkly Gulp sandshrimp or sandworms because they don't fall off the hooks like sandshrimp or prawns do. Lingcod fishing has been excellent this week.   LAKE OUTLOOK AGATE:  The lake has inched up to 72 percent full and is starting to settle out after the big influx of water earlier this month. The boat ramp is usable, but the lake likely won't fish well this year because there are no trout stockings planned this spring. The Jackson County Parks Department closes access at dusk. APPLEGATE:  The lake is fishing poorly for holdover rainbow trout 10 to 14 inches long. The surface level is 1,937 feet above sea level and it is expected to rise over the weekend with a little spike in inflows. Anglers can prospect for trout by trolling Wedding Ring lures spiced with worms between 30 and 45 feet deep. Hart-Tish Park and its boat ramp are closed but the French Gulch ramp is open. Bass fishing is slow. Applegate Lake has a standing advisory against eating too many portions of warmwater fish because of elevated mercury levels found in the bass and crappie. DIAMOND: Fishing has been good from boats with worms under bobbers or PowerBait. The north ramp is open, and about two dozen boats were on the water Sunday catching rainbows 12 to 15 inches long. The limit is eight trout longer than 8 inches, but only one can be longer than 20 inches. EMIGRANT:  The county park boat ramps are usable but there is virtually no fishing effort at the reservoir. The lake is 71 percent full. FISH:  The lake has inched up to 55 percent full. Look for catches of rainbow trout and chinook with worms, PowerBait or jigs. Tiger trout must be released unharmed. Chinook are legally considered trout here and can be kept as part of the five-trout daily limit. The chinook are in the 12- to 14-inch range. A sno-park pass is required to park at the Forest Service lot near the ramp. HOWARD PRAIRIE:  The lake is closed to angling until April 25. HYATT:  The lake is closed to angling until April 25. LOST CREEK: Look for good trolling for holdover trout upstream of Peyton Bridge and near the spillway access area. The lake level had risen two feet to 1,849 feet above sea level Thursday. A morass of floating logs and other debris is packed in around the dam's spillway. LAKE OF THE WOODS: The lake is ice-free, and some fishing is going on in open-water near the resort with PowerBait. Look for a mix of rainbows, kokanee and perch near the resort. WILLOW:  Fishing from the bank with PowerBait or worms has been fair around the resort and directly across from the county boat ramp, but there is very little effort. The lake is full.   RIVER OUTLOOK ROGUE: The lack of rain has the Rogue flowing low and cold river-wide, but that hasn't kept anglers from picking up fish daily in each stretch of the system. That means the best bet remains fishing the water closest to home or the stretches you know best, because there are a mix of fresh winter steelhead and spawned-out summer steelhead kelts in deeper, slower stretches of water. A little spike in flows is expected Sunday from rains forecast to hit the region Saturday and Sunday. While it won't lead to significant jumps in flows, the rain will get steelhead moving, and that's always a good thing. In the middle Rogue, fresh winter steelhead moved into the canyon water in the Merlin and Galice areas last week, but the majority of the action was in the Lathrop's to Robertson Bridge stretch. It's been crowded, and most boats are scaring up a fish or two each trip side-drifting roe or fishing plugs in deeper, slower water. Flows at Grants Pass were down to 1,489 cubic feet per second Thursday and forecast to peak Monday at about 3,000 cfs. Slowly drag chunks of roe and sandshrimp for them, or fish deep-diving plugs at the tailouts. In the upper Rogue, the flows out of Lost Creek Lake remained a scant 900 cfs most of the week, and that's slowed everything down. Still, 140 winter steelhead were counted Wednesday at Cole Rivers Hatchery, upping the season total to 488 fish. Flows at Dodge were a skimpy 1,145 cfs. The stretch from Takelma to Dodge still has a large root wad in the channel, causing some heartache for driftboaters. Fishing is good with a mix of offerings, including roe, egg flies or pink worms side-drifted under bobbers and small rattleless plugs. The lower Rogue is starting to get its spring chinook bite on, with catches daily from boat and bank anglers between Huntley Park and Quosatana Creek. Bankies are using No. 4 Spin-Glo's with a Kwikfish slider, and boat anglers are doing best with anchovies on a Rogue Bait rig and a green blade. Anchor in the migration lanes and wait for the action to come to you. Winter steelhead fishing is best in the Agness area, with plenty of fresh fish. APPLEGATE —  Winter steelhead fishing is slowing as conditions deteriorate, with not much prospect for improving until Sunday or Monday. CHETCO  — The river was down to a skinny 478 cfs, and most steelheaders are holding off until Monday, when the river will rise to about 1,700 cfs and start dropping. UMPQUA — Winter steelhead fishing has slowed amid low and cold flows. ELK/SIXES — The Elk and Sixes were low, cold and clear this week. Steelhead fishing should resume Monday after flows rise and start to drop.
