[Grants Pass Police Department photo] GRANTS PASS — A motorist was cited for careless driving in the wake of a Saturday morning crash that took out a recently restored historic sign near the Caveman Bridge. Bartholomew Lewis, 33, was able to walk away from the airborne crash after the 1990s model Honda Accord coupe he was driving struck the “Redwood Empire“ sign at 9:05 a.m. Saturday, according to a release issued by Grants Pass police over the weekend. Witnesses told police that Lewis had been driving southbound on Sixth Street when the Honda veered off the road, drove over a curb, jumped into the air and struck the sign before coming to a rest near a pedestrian path that crosses under the bridge. The Redwood Empire sign dates back to 1941, and had been restored by the city of Grants Pass in 2019, according to a Grants Pass Daily Courier report about the crash Saturday. The full extent of damage to the sign is under investigation, according to police No injuries were reported. Lewis was able to extricate himself from the vehicle on his own, and police made contact with him near the scene of the crash at the Riverside Inn.
