> By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune September 10. 2014 10:43AM Medford teenager indicted on attempted murder, assault charges A 17-year-old Central Medford High School student who allegedly tried to shoot another teenager in the head and pistol-whipped him when the gun malfunctioned during a conflict over a girl has been indicted by a Jackson County grand jury on an attempted murder charge. Shylo Juan Antonio Ramirez, of the 3200 block of Blackthorn Way, was also indicted Tuesday on charges of second-degree assault, first-degree robbery and possession of heroin, Medford police reported. He will be tried as an adult. Medford police declined to release the name of the victim, who is 18, as police are still looking for additional suspects who took part in a beating that put the victim in the hospital with head injuries that required several stitches. "This is still a very active investigation," Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau said . The beating occurred in the pre-dawn hours of Aug. 25 in the parking lot of the New Apostolic Church, 2121 Delta Waters Road. Police said Ramirez and the 18-year-old had been exchanging trash talk over a girl — Ramirez's ex-girlfriend who had moved on and was dating the 18-year-old. "They agreed to meet in person about it, perhaps to settle the score, so to speak," Budreau said. Police said the two met at 3 a.m., a posse of Ramirez's friends in tow. Ramirez pulled out a 9 mm handgun and pointed it at the 18-year-old's head. He tried to fire the weapon, but it would not shoot. "Had the gun not malfunctioned, we believe we would be dealing with a murder and not an attempted murder," Budreau said. Ramirez allegedly then struck the 18-year-old with the firearm, knocking him to the ground. The group moved in, kicking and punching the 18-year-old multiple times. The group ended the beating by stealing the victim's shoes. The victim walked home, and his mother took him to a local hospital in the morning when she learned what had happened, Budreau said. The 18-year-old was treated for head injuries, multiple bruises and abrasions all over his body and released, Budreau said. Police arrested Ramirez at Central Medford High School on Sept. 3. In a car parked less than a block away from the school, they located his backpack, which contained a gun, heroin and packaging material. Investigators believe the weapon is the same one used during the attack. The weapon's owner is still being investigated, but police said it does not belong to anyone in Ramirez's family and could be stolen. "It's something we're considering," Budreau said. Police said Ramirez has had other run-ins with law enforcement stretching back to 2010, including marijuana possession, vandalism and criminal mischief. He has been held at Jackson County Community Justice's Juvenile Services Division since his arrest, facility officials said. Court records show a preliminary hearing on the case is set for Friday.
