After dropping their SOC opener Tuesday at North Medford, the conference-favorite Grizzlies could little afford dropping two straight. But reliable Jamie Roupp came up clutch as Ashland defeated Crater 54-51 in double overtime. It was big for us, Ashland coach Ken Lathen said. We needed it and we were fortunate to get it. The game could have gone either way. Roupp, a 5-foot-8 senior guard, made 5 of 6 free throws in the extra periods, including two with 21.8 seconds remaining in the second overtime for the final margin of victory. Kelsey Holderness tried to tie the game for Crater (9-3, 1-1 SOC) with an off-balance 3-pointer just before the final buzzer, but failed to draw iron. — Roupp finished with a team-high 15 points to go with six assists, five rebounds and four steals. Roupp had four assists to Josie McDermott in the first quarter as the Grizzlies (12-1, 1-1 SOC) grabbed a 16-6 lead. McDermott had eight of her 12 points in the opening period. (McDermott) slipped in the back side of their zone and Jamie (Roupp) made some great passes, said Lathen. Freshman post Brenna Heater added 11 points, five rebounds and four blocks for the Grizz. Emily Brookins had a hot hand for the Comets. The senior guard led all scorers with 18 points, including five of Crater's seven 3-pointers. Holderness had the other two treys and finished with 17 points. Crater was lighting it up, said Lathen. We kept switching defenses to keep them off-balance. The Grizzlies held a 38-19 advantage in rebounds ' 20 on the offensive end ' to overcome a 13-for-25 effort from the free-throw line. Josh Cornelius led Ashland (7-5, 1-0 SOC) with 14 points, while Ryan Pittman had 10 points and 13 rebounds. Colin Costantino added 11 points and 11 boards for the Grizz. Grants Pass (6-6, 1-0 SOC) revved up its fastbreak to take a 26-5, first-quarter lead and extended it to 48-19 at halftime. Senior post Jason Nunnemaker paced a balanced Grants Pass attack with 13 points. Tony Devaughn drilled four 3-point baskets for the Eagles and led all scorers with 16 points. Eagle Point (5-7, 0-1 SOC) was missing its entire starting lineup. Mychal Williams, Derek Grieve, Shasta Bateman and Austin Owens were serving a one-game suspension for disciplinary reasons and starting point guard Zach Krzyzanski missed the game due to illness. Roseburg had a 12-point lead with just over four minutes left in regulation when the Pelicans (8-4, 1-0 SOC) went on a 15-3 run to tie the game. Landrum capped the run with a 3-pointer with 32 seconds left, bringing the game to its first overtime. In the second overtime, Seth Hughes broke the tie by draining a free throw with two seconds left, giving Roseburg (6-5, 0-1) little chance to recover.
