Whatever became of it? It would really be swell if we did have this kind of development. Just curious. — Jack E. S., Medford Well Jack, the project proved to be one of those one-story wonders. Although the project apparently gained bureaucratic approval, it failed to capture the fancy of the investment community and didn’t get much further than the announcement stage. The luxury retirement community planned on 10.65 acres — roughly half the size of the Rogue Valley Mall — northeast of the intersection of Delta Waters and Crater Lake had a $21.7 million price tag. That was a decade ago before real estate prices began going crazy. The developer was an organization known as the Center for Living Management Inc. Architect Randall Rands says that everything was ready to go but financing never came through. Eventually CLMI dissolved and the property was sold. Advertisement Rands says that fellow architect Calvin Martin built an 8-foot-by-8-foot model of the retirement center that would’ve included a 29,000-square-foot activity center, movie theater, indoor pool, spas and saunas and tennis courts. A gardening area, a three-hole chip-and-putt golf course and an electronic driving range were also part of the plan. "Unless you’re a multimillionaire, you have to convince someone else that your dream is worth their investment," Rands says.
