Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend March 15, 2006 Local man dies in I-5 crash A Medford man died in a head-on collision early Monday on Interstate 5 near Sacramento. Lary Shipp, 62, of Medford, was driving north in the southbound fast lane at about 3:15 a.m. Monday when he collided with a southbound car driven by Sandra Mancill, 46, of Sacramento. Both drivers died at the scene, the California Highway Patrol reported. There were no passengers in either car. Shipp was driving a silver 2006 Hyundai Sonata at an estimated 85 to 90 mph, California Highway Patrol officer Bob Lagomarsino said. Mancill was driving a rented 2006 Chevy Malibu at about 80 mph. "There was no evasive action," Lagomarsino said. "At those speeds it’s a pretty sure thing that you won’t have any survivors." He said police had received a call about a wrong-way driver in a silver car on the freeway shortly before the crash happened. The collision closed a stretch of the freeway for several hours as traffic was directed to local roads to bypass the crash site. Lagomarsino said the investigation, including toxicology tests on both drivers, is continuing.
