Residents who rely on a well for their drinking water can bring a cup of untreated well water for testing from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, at the Central Point library, 116 Third St., and 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, at the Southern Oregon Extension Service auditorium, 569 Hanley Road. Water samples should be collected in a clean, glass jar and kept chilled. While residents wait for their test results, a free class will provide information on how to avoid groundwater contamination and how to keep septic systems functioning properly. Amy Patton, a hydrogeologist with Patton Environmental LLC, is working with Jackson Soil and Water Conservation District to put on the classes. She says testing for nitrates is a quick, easy way to tell whether contaminants are getting through to well water from activities at the surface. Data about nitrate, bacteria and arsenic in Jackson County, collected through Real Estate Transaction testing for those three constituents, show pockets of elevated nitrate, particularly in the Central Point and north and west Medford areas, according to a release by Patton Environmental. A study conducted by the Department of Environmental Quality last spring found elevated nitrate in 30 percent of 54 Jackson County wells tested, 7 percent with levels above the drinking water standard of 10 milligrams per liter. Nitrate above the drinking water standard can cause blue baby syndrome and be hazardous for pregnant and nursing mothers, the elderly and the immune-compromised. Additional nitrate testing is also available at the Jackson SWCD office, 89 Alder St., Central Point, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays. For more information, call SWCD at 541-664-1070.
