The ash followed a wind shift that was foreseen, which increased fire activity on the fire's northern flank. Fire officials expect the ash fall to continue. "Increased fire activity with northwesterly winds is expected again today," according to the latest release from fire officials. "Spotting and group torching will likely occur, followed by smoke and potential ash into Rim Village later in the afternoon." On Thursday night, infrared scans taken from an airplane that flew over the blaze showed it had grown to 1,125 acres by about 10 p.m. Thursday. Most of that growth was from burnout operations along established control lines, according to fire officials. The fire, which has been burning since July 28, is 12 percent contained. The cause is not known. A level 1 evacuation notice, which asks park visitors and residents to be prepared for evacuation, remains in place for Rim Village and park headquarters until further notice. Previously instituted trail closures also remain in place. The Pacific Crest Trail is closed from Dutton Creek Camp north to the PCT parking lot on North Entrance Road. Trail hikers are asked to use East Rim Drive as an alternate route. The Rim Trail and West Rim Drive are both closed between Rim Village and North Junction, as are the Lightning Spring Trail and backcountry ramp. Firefighters say they are still monitoring a spot fire burning in the caldera. Officials say it is putting off less smoke than it did Thursday, thanks to lack of vegetation and pumice fields in the area. There are currently close to 400 personnel on the fire, along with 12 engines, five water tenders, eight helicopters and two air tankers.
