Officials with the Ashland Forest Resiliency Stewardship Project say smoke from a controlled underburn in the Ashland watershed may continue into this morning. During an underburn, crews start a fire on a designated area that borders a road or other set fireline to keep the flames low. Traditional controlled burns involve burning brush piles one at a time. "Underburns mimic the long-absent role of fire in our local ecosystem, consuming needles, leaves and branches on the forest floor that would otherwise accumulate over time and potentially fuel a severe fire that could threaten the community and our municipal water supply," Ashland Fire & Rescue forestry division chief Chris Chambers said in a news release. Heavy smoke will be visible from Ashland and nearby areas, and residents may smell smoke. Several trails and streets will be closed during the burn. They include the White Rabbit trailhead, the White Rabbit trail at the U.S. Forest Service boundary, Mike Uhtoff Trail, the Alice in Wonderland Trail above Bandersnatch, Ashland Loop Road above the Morton Street Junction and the Jabberwocky and Caterpillar trails.
