EDUCATION Caballero, Lightheart winning Medford school board election Wallan and Campbell neck-and-neck for board Lilia Caballero and Janet Lightheart were well ahead of their opponents, while incumbent Kim Wallan and challenger Michael Campbell were neck-and-neck in unofficial election results for the Medford School District Board of Directors Tuesday night. Competing for Position 5 on the board, Wallan trailed with 49 percent of the vote compared to Campbell's 51 percent. "We're cautiously optimistic," Campbell said about the unofficial results. "In a race this close, it's better to have an edge than be behind. Our message of greater transparency and open communication resonated with voters." For Position 6, Lightheart had 72 percent and was well ahead of perennial candidate Curt Ankerberg, who lost a race for Jackson County Commissioner in the November 2014 election. A mother of six, Lightheart is an active volunteer who speaks fluent Spanish. She is pursuing a master's degree in teaching at Southern Oregon University. Caballero, the cultural liaison coordinator for the Medford Police Department, had 65 percent of the vote for Position 7 on the board. She was trailed by Jackson County Roads Department construction manager Kevin Christiansen, who had 24 percent of the vote, and Don Libby, a security company chief financial officer, who had 11 percent. "I'm really excited," Caballero said of her strong lead. "I feel I represent the voice of the parents and the students. I'm very involved with my community and aware of their needs." Caballero said she would like to encourage more parental involvement once she's on the board. "One of the things I feel very strongly about is getting more participation from parents into students' education," she said. "That will help us a lot — both the students and the district." School advocate Karen Starchvick ran unopposed for Position 4 and had 99 percent of the vote, with write-in votes totaling 1 percent. With his race still hanging in the balance, Campbell said the Medford School District will be in good hands. "It's a promising outlook for the district," he said.
