Crater romps past No. 12 team in nation ANTIOCH, Calif. � The Crater High girls not only defeated Berkeley, Calif., in the finals of the 16-school open division of the West Coast Jamboree Saturday, but the Comets dominated one of the nation�s top-rated teams. Crater limited Berkeley, ranked 12th by USA Today, to 27-percent shooting from the field and methodically pulled away for a 54-35 victory at Deer Valley High School. "We played several different zones and had them pretty flustered," Crater coach David Heard said. "They weren�t able to hit the outside shot." Heard devised this strategy to deny Berkeley (10-3) its strength on the inside, led by post Robin Roberson, who has signed a scholarship at Arizona. And Heard had the Comets slow down the pace of the game. "I wanted them to prove they could beat us from the outside," said Heard. "They�re a racehorse-type team." While Berkeley struggled with Crater�s zone, the Comets countered with an efficient 25 of 40 (62 percent) from the field. Amy Denson scored 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Comets� attack. The junior forward was selected the most valuable player in the tournament. "Without question there were a lot of high-profile players who have signed with major colleges here," said Heard, "and she (Denson) was the most consistent and best player in the tournament." Crater junior guard Sarah Pool, who scored 12 points to go with 12 assists, was also chosen to the all-tournament team. CORVALLIS 46, SOUTH MEDFORD 39 � At Eugene, South Medford turned the ball over 30 times and dropped the fourth-place game in the 12-team Farwest Shootout at South Eugene High. The Panthers coughed up the ball 19 times in the first half but only trailed 18-16 at the break. Corvallis pulled away midway through the fourth and sealed the win by making 8 of 10 free throws. Kellie Thomas led South Medford (7-5) with 12 points and five rebounds. Karla Zenz pulled down seven boards and Emily Perttu dished out four assists.
