Writer Brian Doyle, author of the acclaimed novel “Mink River,” will read publicly and lead writing workshops with local teachers and students. The award-winning novelist, also known for his collection of essays, “Grace Notes,” will speak and share his work at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22, at Ashland High School’s Mountain Avenue Theatre, 201 S. Mountain Ave. Tickets cost $15, $12 for students, and are available at Bloomsbury Books and The Bookwagon, online at chautauquawriters.org or at the door. Twice a year, the Chautauqua Poets and Writers board brings authors from around the country to work with area high school and college students and to present readings. “He’s everything we look for when selecting a writer for our series,” says Amy Blossom, branch manager at the Ashland library and a Chautauqua board member. “He’s not only a well regarded and versatile writer, he’s also a teacher who connects easily with students.” The Portland-based Doyle writes fiction, nonfiction, young adult literature and poetry. He’s been a finalist in two categories for the 2016 Oregon Book Awards and nominated nine times in four categories. His other titles include “Plover,” the sequel to “Mink River,” young adult books “Martin Marten” and “Cat’s Foot,” poetry collection “Thirsty for the Joy,” and creative nonfiction, including “Children and Other Wild Animals” and “Leaping.” He teaches at the University of Portland, where he is editor of the university’s Portland Magazine. Doyle’s popular “Mink River” is the story of a community in a small town on the Oregon Coast. Dozens of characters’ lives intertwine and connect with one another. Magical elements overlap with the natural world in a story rich with Irish and Native American folklore. While Doyle writes in short scenes and chapters, often with long sentences or blended words such as "bittersweetorangeyellowacidic" to describe the taste of salmonberries. Amy Blossom says his work is so varied and compelling that she thinks his reading and discussion will appeal to a lot of people. “His mix of storytelling and magic is truly evocative. There’s a philosophy in his work that reaches people in unexpected ways and takes the reader on an amazing journey,” she says. “I think people will leave the event wanting to read more and more of his work.” Angela Decker is a freelance writer living in Ashland.
