Lavender adds a unique, sweet flavor to many foods and drinks, including baked goods, chicken, fish, lemonade and cocktails. During this weekend's festival, lavender lovers will be able to tour five lavender farms. Master Gardeners will provide guided tours of more than 80 varieties of lavender at the Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center's Lavender Demonstration Garden, 569 Hanley Road, Central Point. You can reach them at 541-776-7371. Other stops on the trail include Applegate Valley Lavender Farm, Goodwin Creek Gardens, Lavender Fields Forever and The English Lavender Farm. "Each farm on the trail will embrace the culinary theme," says Bonnie Rinaldi of Lavender Fields Forever. "Food vendors will have all sorts of treats, including lunches, snacks, ice cream, jams, honey and more." Culinary demonstrations will be held at Lavender Fields Forever, 375 Hamilton Road, Jacksonville, at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Essential oils will be featured at 1 p.m. Friday and Sunday. Their phone is 541-702-2250. Goodwin Creek Gardens, 970 Cedar Flat Road, in Williams, will have 60 to 70 varieties of lavender available for sale during the festival. The farm also grows 300 to 400 other types of plants and herbs. For the festival, special booths will showcase pottery, soaps, lotions and creams — all with a lavender theme, of course. The phone for the garden is 541-846-7357. "Tours will include explaining the different types of lavender and the history of the garden," says Jim Becker of Goodwin Creek Gardens. The culinary theme will continue at The English Lavender Farm, 8040 Thompson Creek Road, in the Applegate, where a local food truck will provide a lavender-inspired menu, and attendees will find handcrafted soda, ice cream, cookies, lemonade and chocolate, all infused with lavender. For more information call 541-846-0375. Activities include wreath-making, essential oil demonstrations, and lavender sachet-making for the kids. A gift shop full of handmade products created on the farm are for sale, as well as lavender plants. As its name may imply, The English Lavender Farm has mostly English lavender. "English lavender is smaller but has more vibrant colors and is used for cooking," says Sue Owen of The English Lavender Farm. The Brothers Reed and Jon Galfano will play music at The English Lavender Farm. Visitors will also see Cheryl D. Garcia's "Lavandula," an 11-foot-tall, 400-pound sculpture that depicts a tied bundle of lavender flowers. Two local food trucks, Sweet Cream and Full Moon Crepes, will be parked at Applegate Valley Lavender Farm in Grants Pass. Sweet Cream will offer several flavors of ice cream, including four lavender flavors: Lavender Lemon Zest, Lavender Honeycomb (made with lavender honey), Sweet Cream with lavender chocolate chips, and a dairy-free option, Coconut with Lavender. Full Moon Crepes will offer both sweet and savory crepes. Applegate Valley Lavender Farm,15370 Highway 238, in Grants Pass, has U-Pick lavender and many places for photos, which sometimes include the critters on the farm. The Lavender Farm Store will offer fresh and dried lavender, handmade lavender products and some items from France. Call 541-291-9229 for more information. According to Rinaldi, the Southern Oregon Lavender Festival has grown about 25 percent each year. "We're expecting between 2,500 and 3,000 people this year." Lavender lovers will have a second chance to enjoy most of the same festivities during the Oregon Lavender Association statewide Lavender Farm Tour July 8-10. Many lavender farms throughout the state, some that are not generally open to the public, will open their farm doors that weekend for a statewide lavender “open house.” Hours for the Southern Oregon Lavender Festival are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday-Sunday, June 24-26. Admission is free. Guests are encouraged to bring a camera. Photographers will have the opportunity to submit lavender-themed pictures to the annual Oregon Lavender Association photo contest.
