LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Feb. 9 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 9, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Feb. 9, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News OnTrack cold-blooded Regarding "Low-income renters face loss of apartments" (Feb. 1): It is unthinkable that OnTrack is forcing Grants Pass low-income renters out of housing they can afford. OnTrack's rationalization? "[It's] … to help (clients) maintain their sobriety so they can be good citizens … we don't want to just cast them out and say, 'sink or swim.' " It's OK to tell the less fortunate "sink or swim," but not recovering addicts? That's pathetic, particularly in a rental market with "a near void of rentals." We're not unsympathetic to those overcoming addiction, but finding them a place to live shouldn't be effected by evicting others. "OnTrack officials say they will work with the displaced tenants to find them new homes and will not leave them homeless." How? By moving them to another city? (That's not a suggestion.) These are good renters living on the edge. Even if a rental unit is found, where does first and last month's rent come from? And the security deposit? If OnTrack can find housing for displaced tenants, why can't they do the same for their "clients" instead? OnTrack is demonstrating utter cold-bloodedness in forcing people out into the wintertime. Karla and David Angal Medford Give it time In reply to Larry Ryerson's take on the Phoenix traffic flow. I see him shift the blame to the new bike lane. I would ask him to be patient until the interchange construction is done. There is a constantly changing challenge to negotiate the work and pillars through that intersection, and that is causing the bottleneck. Most have been patient through these times and respect the workers and the work going on. Let's keep it up. I personally am delighted with the bike lane, as one who uses it to stay healthy and get to destinations. I travel from Creekside Estates on Pacific Highway and attempt to visit my brother in Phoenix. I can now travel the "death curve" and turn left onto First Street, which is actually safer than leaving the bike path at the construction intersection and trying to cross into Phoenix. So let's hold our judgments until the work is done. Kudos to Phoenix for the new and forward plans for our city. Robbin Webb Phoenix Making landlords wince I got a kick out of the article in the Feb. 3 Mail Tribune, "Students want ban on banning students." In the article, Associated Students of Southern Oregon University make a pitch that finding a place to rent around here is difficult enough without being stereotyped and denied acceptance due to being a student. One student, describing how tough it is, admitted to, “Sometimes renting out his couch or garage without telling the landlord. It happens all the time,” he said. “I’ve seen people running electrical cords out the window to campers and charging rent.” This would not be allowed in any rental agreement, and is the kind of shenanigans that make landlords wince. It did get me to chuckling, though. J. Miller Highland Property Management, Ashland Are we numb? "There may be somebody with tomatoes in the audience. So if you see somebody getting ready to throw a tomato, knock the crap out of them, would you? Seriously. OK? Just knock the hell — I promise you, I will pay for the legal fees. I promise." Donald Trump spoke those words at a rally in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on caucus day. One of the front-runners for the Republican nomination for president encouraged his followers to do serious physical harm to a potential protester and protect them from repercussions using his wealth. Shame on anyone who supports his candidacy, shame on the Republican establishment for not denouncing him outright, and shame on the media for not reporting this story as the lead on every broadcast and in every newspaper. Have we really become so numb to outrage that this kind of vicious rhetoric doesn't get any attention?
