I believed that “anyone” could be successful, find the job of their dreams, make decent money, have great relationships and live happily ever after. Well, the longer you live, the more you recognize that the above is not written in stone. Life is like a roller coaster. Its ups and downs can be navigated very well by some, but not by everyone. Over the years I have been handed some difficult challenges that got in the way of many of my dreams and aspirations. I have gotten through most of them intact, but I credit my tenacity as one of the reasons. When I have an idea that excites me I will do whatever it takes to make it happen. My career has been predicated on my love for mind/body medicine. It still appeals to me and continually stimulates my innate curiosity about the field. What I realize more and more, especially after speaking to thousands of people, is that not everyone has goals to fulfill, nor the need to pursue them. Some people might just be happy staring at their navel for days on end. And guess what? It’s OK! As a culture we hammer away at the continued pursuit of “being the best you can be”! We show images and discuss individuals who have gone beyond and above their potential. We are supposed to look young, climb mountains, cycle till we drop, work until we’re in the box, and be eternally happy. Well, the bottom line is that the majority of people are just trying to get through their days, so they can get home, kick off their shoes, have a meal and chill out for the night. They are paying bills, raising kids, trying to connect to family and friends and hopefully have some time for themselves. We must also add to this the ever increasing demands on our time for gadgets, and the need to be attached to them 24/7. I have realized more and more that it’s okay to not have to drive yourself nuts to excel beyond your limitations or the value system you put in place for yourself. It’s OK to be content with who you are in any given moment as long as you’re not mean or immoral. The best you could be might just be about striving to be kinder, more understanding, less judgmental and more interested in being altruistic. When we stop trying so hard to be something we’re not, the universe seems more apt to embrace us with open arms. We become more approachable and who knows, things might happen without us having to try so hard. Author, humorist, PBS star and Fortune 500 trainer Loretta LaRoche lives in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
