Fred Keene Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 12, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Feb. 12, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Fred Keene passed away January 25, 2015 on what would have been his 91st birthday. Fred was born in Applegate, Ore. to Mary Ramus. He grew up in the Rogue Valley and was one of seven children. Fred joined the U.S. Navy and served on the USS San Jacinto for 18 months in battle during World War II. While on leave from the Navy, on a visit home, he met Joan (Black) Keene who a short time later he married. They had two children and were married 59 years before Joan passed away in 2004. Fred worked for many years for Dumas Laundry in Medford. Murray and Jack Dumas, who he worked for, were long time friends and like family. Then for a brief time he worked for Steiner before retiring. Fred was a strong family man and loved spending time with his wife, his kids, and his grandkids. He enjoyed working with wood and built shelves and decorative wishing wells for his family. Survivors include his daughter, Sherrie Brewer of Medford; a son, Richard Keene and his wife, Julie; five grandchildren, Shannon McAvin of Medford, Candi Piper and her husband Robert of Veneta, Cortnie Peeler and her husband Justin of Veneta, Jennifer Keene of Portland, and Scott Keene of Hawaii; three great-grandchildren, Hailey Duran and her husband Hunter of Medford, Tommy Webb, and Riley Peeler of Veneta; he also had two great-great-grandchildren, Addisyn and Logan Duran both of Medford; and Ronald McAvin who was like a son. Besides his wife Joan, he was preceded in death by his mother, Mary; his brother, Wyatt; and sisters, Sally, Val, Micky, Rhoda, and Audry; and his son-in-law, Chris Brewer. The memorial service for Fred Keene will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 16, 2015 at Conger Morris, 800 S Front St. Central Point, Ore. Fred Keene was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, and friend. He will forever be in our hearts.
