Sid McKeen: A bumper crop of idle observations By Sid McKeen More Content Now MailTribune.com By Sid McKeen More Content Now Posted May. 18, 2015 @ 8:59 am By Sid McKeen More Content Now Posted May. 18, 2015 @ 8:59 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2325,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> Idle thoughts while idling in heavy spring traffic, and waiting for the light to turn green: — Sign on rear bumper of a car up ahead brags, “This car climbed Mt. Washington.” Big deal, there‘s a road all the way to the top. I’d bet that driver will never rest ’til it climbs Everest. — Man on a sidewalk, holding a sign that reads. “Will work for pay.” Funny, you never seem to see a businessman in a suit and tie with a sign saying, “Will pay for work.” — Vanity plate on a passing car reads, ANAGRAM. I immediately try rearranging the letters to make a different word. No such luck; there is no anagram for “anagram.“ That figures. No language in which the word “verb” is a noun can be expected to make much sense. — Window washers 12 stories up on a high-rise office building blithely going about the business at hand. You wonder if they give any thought to the gravity of the situation. — A car with Florida plates flashes by, reminding me that today’s collegians like to spent their spring breaks there. The closest we ever came to the Sunshine State was using orange crates for bookcases in the dorm. — There’s a driver over there from Canada. Canadians are great people, but if they really want to hang onto our friendship, they’d best find a way to keep all those cold-air fronts from escaping down our way every winter. — Sign: “Next Rest Area, 47 miles.” And you thought you had to go before. Ever see anybody actually resting at one of these stops? — Radio commercial: “My name is Joe Loudmouth and I approve this message.” Of course, you do, Joe. You’re the one who bought and paid for it, right? As for elect-me signs nailed to trees, I’d punish offending candidates by tying them there for a week after election day. Speaking of candidates, I’ll lay you 4 to 1 more people get wrong numbers in voting booths than they do in phone booths. — Newspaper headline on a sidewalk rack: “Iran leader confident nuke deal with US will bring world peace.” OK, but if we get hornswoggled and the thing blows up in our face, don’t be surprised to hear a lot of us saying, “Ayatollah you so.” — Text message from spouse: “Please don’t call me for the next 20 minutes. I’m going to be taking my shower.” YOUR shower? Whose else would it be, for Pete’s sake? — News flash: Record numbers of viewers paid $100 apiece to watch Floyd Mayweather dance around with Manny Pacquiao. Will everyone who decided to give their hundred bucks to charity instead please rise? Really? Both of you did? This clinker wasn’t the Thriller in Manila, it was the Outrageous in Las Vegas. — Bumper sticker: “I’m a Capricorn.” Younger folks make a big thing over the signs they were born under. My generation is more conscious of the signs we were born over — Gerry’s Bar & Grill, say. — What’s that gathering over there in the park? It’s a cadre of unionized school teachers touting their case for higher pay. Well, you can say this: They’re setting a striking example for their students. Hey, was that a long red light or what?
