According to an interim stipulated order signed by OMB Medical Director Joe Thaler on Wednesday, Thomashefsky may continue to practice medicine in Oregon but “must not order or perform any injections except immunizations recommend by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.” He also must not “retrieve or process any blood or tissue from a patient” unless it is sent to an Oregon-certified laboratory. OMB Chief Investigator Eric Brown Wednesday would not disclose any details of the OMB’s investigation except what was included in the interim order. “The Board received credible information regarding Licensee that resulted in the Board initiating an investigation,” the order says. “The results of the Board’s investigation to date have raised concerns to the extent that the Board believes it necessary that Licensee agree to certain terms until the investigation is completed.” Thomashefsky, who specializes in nonsurgical orthopedics, including regenerative injection therapy, has offices in Santa Barbara, Calif., and Ashland. His Santa Barbara office has been closed since March 19 by order of the Santa Barbara County public health officer. Santa Barbara public health officials performed a routine investigation of his office there after one of his patients contracted hepatitis C. It has not been determined whether that patient was exposed to the blood-borne virus as a result of treatments he or she received at Thomashefsky’s office. Nonetheless, the investigation revealed unsafe infection-control practices, prompting an investigation by the Oregon Health Authority and OMB of his Ashland office, which as of Tuesday afternoon was still open. Thomashefsky did not immediately respond Wednesday afternoon to a voicemail left at his Ashland office and an email.
