Siskiyou Summit celebrates Rogue Valley bluegrass band will perform a CD release concert in Medford Siskiyou Summit bluegrass band from the Rogue Valley is having a CD release concert on Saturday, Oct. 21. The occasion is to celebrate the group's recently released CD, "Breakdown." "Breakdown" has been available since late June, but the band was busy performing concerts so the CD release concert had to be postponed until now. The summer was especially busy for the band and found them traveling around the northwest to perform at major events. Among these were the Oregon State Bluegrass Festival and the Scott Valley Bluegrass Festival. Closer to home, Siskiyou Summit performed at the Britt Festivals where they were the opening act for Linda Ronstadt. Over the years, the band has performed at Tacoma, Washington's "Wintergrass," the Oregon Coast Music Festival, the American Music Festival and many regional community concerts. The concert will include performances of the music from the "Breakdown" and selected cuts from the band's first CD "From The Top," which they released in 2003. In "Breakdown," Siskiyou Summit explores its distinctive bluegrass sound which is a mix of original and tradition songs and styles. It includes nine original songs written by band members and a few close friends, plus some other songs the band "just couldn't resist recording." In addition, there are three live tracks that capture the band's dynamic and entertaining showmanship. Collectively the band has decades of musical performance experience with six strong singers and instrumentalists as well as song writers and arrangers. Jeff Jones on mandolin, Glenn Freese on guitar and Bob Evoniuk on Dobro all used to play with the bluegrass group, Foxfire. Crystal Reeves on fiddle played with the national touring acoustic group, the Robin Flower Band. Rick Nelson on banjo played with the Rogue Valley Bluegrass Boys. Jim Calhoun on upright bass is in demand for a number of groups in the area. Every year since 2001 Siskiyou Summit has also developed and performed the "O Brother, Siskiyou Summit Plays Bluegrass" show to sold out houses. In 2005 the group performed the show in both Ashland and Medford as an Old-Timey Radio show. Helping the band in the show are performers from the southern Oregon region including Nancy Spencer on the musical saw, Lisa Spencer and Lorna Wolvin on vocals, Julian Jones on fiddle, the Goldman Family Band and Paul Jones as "Old-Timey Radio announcer "Pappy Lunn." The audience was encouraged to dress in 1930s period clothing or as characters from the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" movie as well as sing along on their favorite numbers. This year's show is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 17. Siskiyou Summit's first CD release "From the Top," was recorded in 2003 and showcased the band's variety of musical tastes with songs ranging from Ralph Stanley to Johnny Nash as well as several original songs. The band's most recent release, "Breakdown," displays more of the group's song-writing and arranging abilities as well as giving listeners a taste of the band's lively stage performances.
