Cody Dempsey, 26, was lodged in the Jackson County Jail Wednesday night on a probation violation, Jackson County sheriff's Sgt. Christine Bronson said. She didn't have details on when or if additional charges related to the violent theft would be filed. A second man suspected in the attack, Joseph Walter III, 38, is still being sought. Crime Stoppers of Southern Oregon will pay a reward of up to $1,000 for any information leading to his arrest, according to its Facebook page. The robbery and assault reportedly happened about 9:50 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, on Highway 62 just north of Shady Cove. A 24-year-old man who knew Walter and Dempsey reportedly picked up them and a third unidentified man near the intersection of Highway 227 and West Fork Trail Creek Road. The suspects asked the driver to pull over on Highway 62 near Shady Cove, and when he did, Walter and Dempsey beat the man unconscious, police said. The victim told police he woke up on the roadside, watching his 1996 Buick Park Avenue pull away. The man suffered cuts and bruises, but declined medical treatment, sheriff's department officials said. The car was found the next morning in the 1200 block of Old Ferry Road in Shady Cove with a blown tire and some front-end damage. Crime Stoppers said Walter is 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighs about 200 pounds, and has brown hair and brown eyes. His tattoos include flames on his right wrist, angel wings and the message "In Loving Memory of Jamie Marie" on his upper right arm. "Walter III" is tattooed on his back, and the letters "CAL" are tattooed on his left shin. He may also have piercings in his ears, tongue and lip.
