PHOENIX — Injuries and a slew of Phoenix penalties helped Henley climb back into Friday night’s Skyline Conference football game. Justin Knight, however, made sure the Pirates had the final say. The senior running back rumbled for 211 hard-earned yards and three touchdowns on 41 carries as the Pirates did just enough late to fend off Henley 28-19 at Jack Woodward Stadium. Knight’s evening became much busier when fellow running back Zach Atteberry left in the second quarter with a wrist injury. In the third quarter, starting sophomore quarterback Dylan Knudson exited the game for good with an unknown injury, which pushed fellow sophomore Chase Courtney under center for the remainder of the tightly contested battle. Even with the loss of two key contributors, the Pirates managed to outscore Henley 14-6 in the final quarter. “Some leaders stepped up for us tonight,” said Knight. “Some things weren’t going right, and we didn’t want to lose. That was the difference.” Phoenix (5-1, 3-0 Skyline), which also had 11 penalties for 100 yards, led just 14-13 early in the fourth quarter when senior Mase Masalosalo turned the momentum back toward the Pirates. The defensive lineman shed a block and reached out to block a Henley punt, setting up Phoenix at the 9 yard line. Knight busted up the middle two plays later for a 10-yard TD run and a 21-13 advantage. The Pirate defense held firm on Henley’s next possession, giving the ball back to the offense with seven minutes to play. Knight took over from there, going 11 and 13 yards on consecutive carries to push the ball to the Henley 35. Two plays later, Knight showed off the full repertoire. He juked a defender at the line of scrimmage, busted through another would-be tackler five yards later, and then spun free of two more pursuers near the 15 yard line, which gave him a free path to pay dirt. “It was a heated game and I knew we needed a score,” said Knight of his 34-yard touchdown run. “Honestly, I black out a little and when I turned around I just saw the end zone, so I kept running.” Henley (2-4, 1-2) tacked on a late score on quarterback Kyle Hadwick’s 57-yard TD run with just over four minutes to play, but the Pirates would recover the onside kick and run out the clock. “This team competes every single week,” said coach Toby Walker. “The last couple of weeks we have started a little slow and have been a little tight, but we’ve been doing a great job finishing the game. I couldn’t ask for more.” Phoenix raced out to a 14-0 lead behind touchdown runs from Knight and Atteberry. A fumble, the first of two by the Pirates, helped Henley cash in on its first TD to make it 14-7 at the half. Another Pirates’ fumble set up Connor Noonan’s second touchdown run of the game, this one from 10 yards out. The two-point conversion attempt failed, however, and 14-13 was as close as Henley would get before Knight took over. “We had some silly penalties and we were losing the field position battle,” said Walker. “We did a much better job in the second half in those two phases. That was a big difference right there.” Knudson was 3 of 4 passing for 43 yards before his injury. Senior Jessi Daniels had 34 of those yards on one catch to lead the Pirates. Hadwick completed 10 of 20 for 109 yards and led the Hornets with 76 yards rushing on 15 attempts.
