Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Mar. 12, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Mar. 12, 2015 at 12:01 AM »  Social News March 12, 1915 J.C. Devereaux, held in the county jail under an indeterminate sentence of from two to 20 years for forgery, was taken to the state prison at Salem Thursday. Devereaux since his incarceration has sold magazine articles to Munsley's, the Review of Reviews and the Literary Digest, and during his prison term expects to continue his literary work. Most of the articles he has sold have first passed through the hands of Circuit Judge F.M. Calkins for criticism. Practically all of his time in jail is spent writing, a typewriter being one of his luxuries. Devereaux is a young man, and before he landed in the county jail engaged in varied pursuits. Friends will ask the prison authorities to follow his literary bent during his prison term. The sentenced man is also a poet.   The annual spring opening and sale began at the Mann department store Thursday afternoon, continuing until Saturday evening. Spring goods in the latest colors and designs are shown, and a large crowd of buyers, including many from out of town points, were in attendance. Music was furnished Thursday by Messrs Root and Whiatt. The store is tastefully decorated for the occasion. It was the most successful opening in the history of the store. Mann's store is up-to-the-minute, the window displays works of art, and the new merchandise most attractively shown. In Mann's Medford has a metropolitan store, and the steady growth of business testifies to the appreciation of the public.   A novel contest has just been inaugurated by the management of the Page theater in which prizes to the value of $1,000 will be offered as prizes in a voting contest to run over a period of three weeks. First on the list is the new 1915 Maxwell touring car fully equipped with electric lights and starter, top, windshield and speedometer. The second prize is a $100 diamond ring, and the third prize is a $50 diamond ring to be displayed at a local jeweler's. The contest is to start at once, nomination blanks being given with each admission good for fifty votes to enter. The name and address of the one you wish to vote for can be written on the slips and dropped into the ballot box in the lobby of the Page theater.
